Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, odourless, invisible, colourless and tasteless gas making it extremely difficult to notice and its effects can be fatal (on average 30 people die each year).

 

It enters the blood stream from inhalation and mixes with the haemoglobin, reduces the speed at which oxygen is absorbed. Increase of carbon monoxide results in the production of carboxyhaemoglobin. This will eventually stop the transportation of oxygen to the various organs through the body causing unconsciousness and death.

 

The danger is increased as the carbon monoxide will spread throughout the property and not just remain in the immediate area of the faulty gas appliance. The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are no easier to notice as they would imitate flue or even just a headache.

 

1) Gas appliances should be serviced annually at least. Please note that landlord certifications or appliance checks are no substitute for servicing.

 

2) Discolouration on or around the gas appliance should be acted upon immediately by contacting one of the numbers below.

 

3) Never block an air vent and make sure that your service engineer checks the air ventilation each year.

 

4) Should you notice a change in the burner flame picture (sharp luminous blue) or in the case of older appliances a yellow glow reflection coming from the appliance then call on the numbers below
