Your gas central heating system is designed to heat your home on the coldest of days, which on average exist for only four weeks each year. Therefore the remainder of the year you need the controls to avoid wastage, increase comfort and save on the Gas bill - controls such as programmers and thermostats which are fitted on the hot water cylinder and on the wall. Setting the temperature of the room thermostat will control the gas central heating air temperature in your home. This is a ‘basic practice’ requirement’ set down by part ‘L’. This is a requirement that makes 100% sense in saving energy and maintaining a high level of comfort. With a thermostat on each bedroom radiator you will have gone most of the way to satisfy the ‘Basic Practice’ needs (these controls are connected to some form of zoning valve such as the Honeywell three-way valve). Programmers

Room Thermostat

Without this simple device your heating system will continue running just to keep the boiler warm and the pipes under the floor warm. As you would switch your ignition on your car off when you have finished your journey, your heating thermostats will turn the boiler of when you have finished warming the room. After all you would not leave the car ticking over until you wish to drive somewhere else. Room thermostats come with a programmable time and temperature setting, enabling you to set perhaps a lower temperature in the morning before you go to work and a slightly higher temperature when you are in for the evening, reading a book or watching television. They also come as wireless, so there are no messy wires and they could be moved and screwed to the wall in another place easily. Cylinder thermostats

Strapped to the cylinder, this controls the temperature of your hot water. Without this you are wasting big money! It’s free advice so ask in the showroom or book a call to your home.

 

Radiator thermostats

These small thermostats will pay for themselves over and over again. Two points worth mentioning

• They have no way of switching the gas boiler off when the house is the desired temperature so they do not replace the room thermostat.
• They will only switch the radiator ‘on’ or ‘off’ they will not lower the surface temperature of the radiator. (Imagine trying to reduce the flow temperature of hot water at the kitchen sink. The slowing down of the tap would not reduce the temperature of the water coming from it. It’s the same for a radiator thermostat).
